If you remember Business in a Box as a library of contract templates, it has moved on. It now calls itself the AI-powered operating system for growing businesses, with 18 apps in one workspace. It has served business owners since 2002 and says more than 250,000 businesses have used its products. Nautis launched publicly in July 2026, so there's a 24-year gap in history and in the number of people who have tried each.
The two make a similar promise, with one login in place of a pile of subscriptions. The audiences differ a lot. Business in a Box names business owners and CEOs, professional services firms, consulting firms, agencies, IT services and growing small businesses. We didn't see venture-backed startups named on the pages we read, which is where Nautis aims.
Nautis vs Business in a Box by company type
- A 14-person accounting firm or agency. Business in a Box. Timesheets, time off, salary history, performance reviews, onboarding, assets, workload views and chat are all named. Most of Nautis's fundraising side would go unused.
- A 6-person seed-stage software company. Nautis. Investor search, a fundraising CRM, runway alerts and data rooms are what this team is missing, and it also gets task boards and team chat.
- A solo owner who writes a lot of contracts and policies. Business in a Box, on its Starter plan or its $0 tier. The template library has no match in Nautis.
- A company with 60 people. Business in a Box has an Enterprise tier from 50 people, with multi-company structure, single sign-on and private cloud. The largest Nautis startup plan holds 25.
Cost at real team sizes
Both vendors publish clear prices as of October 2026. On annual billing, Business in a Box is cheaper for one or two people. From three people up Nautis costs less, because its price doesn't rise per person.
| People | Business in a Box | Its yearly total | Nautis | Its yearly total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Starter, about $16.59 a month, annual only | $199 | Launch, $49 | $490 |
| 4 | Starter, about $66 a month, annual only | $796 | Launch, $49 | $490 |
| 5 | Team, $99 | $995 | Launch, $49 | $490 |
| 10 | Business, $199 | $1,990 | Voyage, $99 | $990 |
| 25 | Business, $499 | $4,975 | Fleet, $129 | $1,290 |
| 40 | Business, $799 | $7,960 | Above Fleet's limit | None |
AI allowances flip the picture. Business in a Box gives 10,000 credits per paid user each month, pooled across the organization, and unused credits don't carry over. Ten people share 100,000. Nautis Voyage gives those same ten people 2,000. Vendors define credits differently, so this doesn't mean a 50-to-1 gap in work done, but do ask both what a typical task costs.
Its $0 tier covers one user, with 3,000 AI credits once, valid for 12 months, 100 MB of storage, 12 projects, 100 tasks and 100 free templates, and it needs no card. The refund policy is worth reading: there's a 14-day money-back guarantee, not available once templates have been downloaded after payment. Monthly plans under 10 users also get 20 template downloads per user every 30 days, shared by the team. Nautis has a 14-day no-card trial and no free tier.
What each one does with AI
Business in a Box splits AI in two. BizAI is the assistant on every plan, for planning, writing, analysis and images, and it works with content you give it. Business OS, on the Team plan and up, is where you hire an AI employee by giving it a job title, a department and a job description. You hand it a draft, a plan for the week, a review or research, then check what comes back. Its features list includes a Chief of Staff, and company-level context such as goals and departments arrives on the Business plan.
Its own advice is plain and sensible: treat an agent's output like a first draft from a new colleague. Integrations, API and MCP access are marked coming soon, for Business and up. So as published today, these agents work on what's inside the workspace or what you share with them.
Nautis is set up differently. Its Chief of Staff doesn't wait to be handed work. It builds a 7:00 am briefing from your records, and it can draft a reminder or take a step in a connected tool once someone approves. Integrations reach 1,000+ apps, and an MCP connector lets Claude or ChatGPT work with your data now. That reach has a cost, since someone must connect things, set permissions and review the Approval Center.

The same Monday in two companies
A 12-person consulting firm opens the week. In Business in a Box, the owner sees overdue tasks and who has capacity, a manager approves leave, someone starts a new engagement letter from a template, and an AI employee in the operations department drafts a summary from notes it was given. No one has to chase status in email. Time and salary reports show what the last engagement cost in hours and pay on the Business plan. That is the owner's stated problem: everything still runs through you.
A 12-person startup, nine months into its seed money, opens the same Monday with other questions. Nautis's briefing shows 11 months of runway, a blocker on a board, two overdue invoices and an investor who hasn't answered in nine days. The founder presses Do it on the invoice reminder, reviews the card and approves it. The pipeline and the data room are one click away. The guides don't cover a time and salary cost report, and it won't help the firm above price a new engagement.
Each product answers its own Monday well, and neither would do much for the other company.
Where Business in a Box has the stronger hand
- History and reviews. It reports 4.6 on Capterra from 49 reviews and 4.7 on G2 from 13, and notes these include earlier versions of the product. Nautis has few independent reviews.
- Templates. 3,000+ documents you can adapt is a real asset for any owner without a lawyer on call, though a template doesn't replace legal advice.
- Security paperwork. Its pages list named security attestations and hosting on AWS. We can't point to the same for Nautis, so this may matter for clients who ask.
- Platforms. Native desktop and mobile apps are on every plan, including the $0 tier.
- People management. Timesheets, reviews and workload views are built for a manager running a team week to week, and they go further than the Nautis guides describe.
Where Nautis has the stronger hand
- Fundraising. Investor search, pipeline stages, readiness scoring, data rooms and rehearsal tools. None were listed on the Business in a Box pages we read.
- Money view. Startup Health tracks runway and burn, and overdue invoices appear in the briefing. Nautis is still not an accounting system.
- Agents that reach outside. Connected-app actions with approval exist today, where Business in a Box lists integrations as coming soon.
- Price with 10 or more people. Fleet at $129 covers 25 members, where Business in a Box would be $499.
- Sales pipeline. A Leads CRM with stages and win rates, though a dedicated CRM will still go further.
The trade-offs are worth stating too. Nautis has less history, far fewer AI credits per person, and no method for running a team week to week. Our guide to the first 10 employees covers some of what you'd handle yourself.
A one-week test
- Note the three questions about your company you most often can't answer. If they're about who is doing what, try Business in a Box. If they're about cash, deals and investors, try Nautis.
- Start Business in a Box's $0 tier and Nautis's trial on the same day. Neither needs a card.
- Bring in one real project in the first and one real pipeline in the second. Judge after a week of actual use rather than from the feature lists.
- Check any one thing your clients or investors require, such as a security report or a cap table export, and ask the vendor in writing.
