LivePlan's headline is "Know your numbers are right", and that's a fair summary. From Palo Alto Software, it answers money questions for owners: how much you need, when cash gets tight, and what you can afford. It serves startups, but also restaurants, shops and existing firms, and its benchmarks cover more than 1,000 industries. It has served over 1.5 million businesses, by its own count.
Nautis isn't aiming at that broad audience. It's made for startups, with modules such as a fundraising CRM and a cap table that a dental practice would never open. So the first split is the kind of company you run, and the second is what you want from monthly finance review. We read LivePlan's homepage and pricing page in October 2026.
Are you borrowing or raising?
Money from a bank and money from a venture investor call for different preparation, and each product leans one way. LivePlan's language is about lenders. It has a lender-readiness review that checks your plan the way a bank would and flags what's missing, along with statements with automatic calculations and SBA partner programs. It also covers investor pitches, with a pitch presentation you can export to PowerPoint and an investor readiness review.
Nautis leans the other way. Investor Readiness measures your pitch deck, documents, numbers, pipeline and round terms against what's expected from pre-seed to Series B. It tells you when outreach should start given your runway. There's nothing in the guides about lender formats. If a bank loan is the goal, that alone is a strong reason to pick LivePlan.
The monthly finance habit
LivePlan's strongest idea sits in what happens after the plan is written. On Premium, you connect QuickBooks Online or Xero. Your actual results flow in, your profit and cash forecasts update, and 20+ trend reports compare the budget with reality. Automated monthly analysis explains the variances, and board reports can be generated from the same data. You can run up to 10 full what-if scenarios to test a hire or a slow season.
Nautis offers a different monthly routine. Startup Health tracks cash and burn from your check-ins, the Financial Planner builds a multi-year projection, and scenarios come from cloning a project and changing the copy. There's no budget-vs-actual sync from accounting in the guides we read. Nautis gives you a runway line in the morning briefing and an overdue invoice next to it. It doesn't give you variance analysis, so a finance-minded owner would find it thin. Nautis isn't an accounting system.

A LivePlan Expert add-on costs $30 a month, paid monthly, and gives 30-minute one-on-one video sessions. Its services page lists a professional plan review at a one-time $500. One thing to check is that only one company can be active at a time per subscription, although you can store more and add more active companies. For a single-company owner, Premium at $30 a month paid annually costs less than the cheapest Nautis plan by a wide margin.
Nautis vs LivePlan for two different owners
A second-location bakery
The owner has two years of books in QuickBooks and wants a loan for a second site. She needs a forecast seeded from accounting data, a realistic margin check against bakery benchmarks, and a review before the bank sees it. She then wants to watch cash against plan each month. LivePlan Premium does all of that. Nautis would add a fundraising CRM and a cap table she doesn't need, and leave out the accounting sync she does. This isn't a close call.
A four-person B2B startup, raising a seed in nine months
This team has little revenue, and its books would fit on a page. It needs a projection for investors, but most of its effort goes into pilots, a hiring plan and an investor list. A forecast tool would help for a week. Nautis can hold the leads, tasks and investors alongside that forecast, and the seed-stage page shows how that week might look. LivePlan would still produce a fine plan, but it won't answer who should follow up with which pilot customer today.
Support and guidance
This is one area where LivePlan publishes a clear commitment. Every plan includes a live onboarding session, along with chat and email from real people, Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4 pm Pacific. Webinars add to that, and the Expert add-on gives you dedicated time. Its step-by-step guidance explains why each section matters, so first-time owners learn as they go.
Nautis's guidance comes through its help center and AI: Commodore chat, specialist advisors such as Anchor for finance, and the Chief of Staff's suggestions. Those are available all day but they aren't people. If you want a human to walk you through a cash flow statement, LivePlan is the more reassuring purchase.
What LivePlan does better
- Financial follow-through. Actuals, variance analysis and rolling forecasts are its home ground. Pair them with how to read a financial model if the statements are new to you.
- Industry context. Benchmarks across 1,000+ industries, on Premium, help test whether your margins are realistic.
- Broad fit. It works for almost any business type, not only venture-backed startups.
- Longevity. It has years of use and independent review sites behind it, while Nautis launched publicly only in July 2026.
- Price for the job. $15 to $30 a month on annual billing.
Where Nautis earns the higher price
Nautis costs more because it does different work. For that price you get a single place for the fundraising CRM, leads, invoices, expenses, tasks, a team chat and an AI Chief of Staff that reads all of them. If a startup would otherwise buy several tools for those jobs, the flat plan can make sense, and our tool tax calculator can help you check. If you'd only use the planning part, it won't.
There are also real trade-offs. Credits run out, and when they do AI sending stops until they reset or you top up. Approvals need attention. And planning in Nautis gets you a working document and a projection, which are useful but don't bring the rigor of a tool that has spent years on business planning alone.
Make the call
- Pick LivePlan if you own or are starting a small business of any type, you need a bank-ready plan, or you want monthly budget vs actual from your books.
- Pick Nautis if you're building a venture-style startup with up to 25 people and you want investors, customers, cash and tasks in one workspace.
- Use LivePlan alongside Nautis if you're a startup with real revenue and a finance habit. Let LivePlan handle forecasts, and Nautis the daily operations.
- Delay both if you're pre-idea. Test demand with real people first, using the customer interviews guide, and open planning software once you have something to plan.
FAQ
Which should a small business choose in Nautis vs LivePlan?
LivePlan, in most cases. It's built for owners of many business types, with lender-ready statements, industry benchmarks and budget vs actual from QuickBooks or Xero. Nautis is built for startups, and much of it would go unused by a typical local business.
How much does LivePlan cost?
As of October 2026, Standard is $20 a month, or $15 paid annually, and Premium is $40 a month, or $30 paid annually. The LivePlan Expert add-on is $30 a month. All subscriptions come with a 35-day money-back guarantee.
Does LivePlan's Standard plan connect to QuickBooks?
No. Its plan comparison table shows QuickBooks Online and Xero connections, budget vs actual dashboards and what-if scenarios on Premium. Standard covers the plan, forecast, AI writing help and pitch presentation.
Can Nautis replace my accounting or planning software?
It doesn't replace accounting software: it has runway, projections, invoices and expenses, with no bookkeeping or tax filing. It can hold a business plan and a projection, but for monthly budget vs actual and variance analysis, a tool like LivePlan goes further.
Disclosure: We make Nautis, so we have a stake in this comparison. It's based on published information, not a scored hands-on test. Spotted something out of date? Tell us and we will correct it.
