What it does
Startup Health is a monthly check-in that captures your cash, recurring revenue, and burn in under a minute. Nautis turns those three numbers into runway, growth, and burn-trend metrics, draws charts, raises alerts when something looks bad, and lets you spin up a polished investor snapshot you can share with backers.
Who can use it
- Anyone with read access to the Startup Health module can view metrics, history, and analytics.
- Adding or editing a monthly check-in needs create or update permission on the module.
- Startup Health must be enabled on your plan.
Where to find it
From the sidebar, open Finance and click Startup Health.
Add a monthly check-in
- Click Update Data in the top right.
- The Monthly Founder Check-in dialog opens.
- Choose This month or Other month. If you picked Other month, select the Month and Year. You can record check-ins up to last month.
- Enter Cash Balance — your bank balance at month end.
- Enter Monthly MRR — recurring revenue only (skip one-off sales).
- Enter Monthly Burn — total spend minus revenue. If you're cashflow positive, enter 0.
- As you type, the dialog shows last month's value for comparison and the percent change.
- If you have a check-in for last month, click Copy last month to pre-fill the values and only tweak what changed.
- Click Save & Update Dashboard.
After saving, Nautis opens the Investor Snapshot Editor for that month — you can either polish the narrative right away or click Back to return to the dashboard.
Read the dashboard
The dashboard is split into hero metric cards and a side panel:
- Cash Balance — month-end cash with a percent-change badge (increasing, declining, or flat).
- Monthly MRR — current MRR and growth versus last month, colour-coded green / amber / red.
- Monthly Burn — current burn and whether it grew or shrank versus last month.
- Runway — months of runway left at the current burn rate, plus the change versus last month.
At the top, an alerts strip highlights critical issues — for example, runway dropping below 6 months, MRR growth flipping negative, or burn ballooning. Click the X on the alert strip to dismiss it for this session.
Below the metrics, the History tab lists every check-in in a table, and the Analytics tab plots all four metrics on a single chart so you can see trends over time.
Use the eye icon at the top of the hero band to Show or Hide the intro section. Your preference is remembered.
View or edit a past check-in
- Scroll to the History table on the dashboard.
- Click the Edit (pencil) icon on the row you want to change.
- The check-in dialog opens in edit mode with that month's values loaded.
- Update the numbers and click Save & Update Dashboard.
- To delete a check-in instead, click Delete Check-in at the bottom of the dialog. Confirm in the Delete check-in? dialog. This also removes the linked investor snapshot for that month.
A check-in can become finalized after a snapshot has been shared. When that happens, the dialog tells you the check-in is locked and the inputs are read-only.
Build an investor snapshot
- From the history list, click the View icon on any check-in, or open the editor straight after saving a new one.
- You land on the Investor Snapshot Editor with the metric cards at the top (MRR, Burn, Runway, Cash) and editable sections below.
- Fill in:
- Overview — a short narrative for investors covering the period.
- Execution — what shipped, what you closed, what stalled. Use + Add to create more items.
- Growth — new customers, churn, and revenue concentration.
- Burn — efficiency notes and how spend is allocated.
- Team — team size, hires, attrition, and open roles.
- Focus next month — your top priorities.
- Click Save at the bottom of the editor to keep your edits.
The editor auto-loads sensible defaults from the metrics, so you have a draft to react to rather than a blank page.
Preview the snapshot
- With the snapshot open, click Preview in the top right.
- The Investor Snapshot Preview dialog renders the snapshot the way investors will see it.
- Click Download PDF to grab a portable copy.
- Close the dialog with the X when you're done.
Tips & limits
- Use the bank balance from the last day of the month for Cash Balance — picking a mid-month figure throws runway off.
- MRR should be recurring only. Treat one-off project revenue as cash, not MRR, otherwise growth will swing wildly.
- Burn is spend minus revenue. If you collect more than you spend in a month, enter 0.
- Set a calendar reminder for the first day of every month to capture last month's numbers — consistency is what makes the trend chart useful.
- Snapshots are per-month — you can have at most one check-in per month. Editing simply updates that month's record.
Frequently asked questions
What if I miss a month?
Pick Other month in the check-in dialog and choose the missing month. Backfilling old months catches you up so the trend chart looks right.
Can I tweak the alert thresholds?
The current alert rules (low runway, negative growth, ballooning burn) are built in. The alert strip can be dismissed for the session, but the thresholds aren't user-configurable.
Will investors need a Nautis account to view my snapshot?
No. Anyone with the share link can open the public snapshot in any browser. The link respects whatever expiry and history setting you chose.
What happens to the snapshot if I delete the check-in?
Deleting a check-in also deletes that month's investor snapshot. Active share links for that month stop working.
Can I share multiple months at once?
Yes — when you create or send a share link, toggle Allow history so the recipient can navigate prior months from the same link.
