Sheets

6 min readUpdated

What it does

A built-in spreadsheet workspace. Build budgets, financial models, and trackers with formulas and formatting — without leaving Nautis. Sheets opens as a two-pane view: your list of spreadsheets on the left, and a full spreadsheet editor on the right. You can import existing Excel/CSV files (or pull them straight from Google Sheets), share a sheet with a public or password-protected link, and discuss it with cell-anchored comments.

Who can use it

  • Anyone in your organization with read permission for the Sheets module can view sheets.
  • Create permission is needed for New sheet, importing, and duplicating; update for editing; delete for deleting.
  • Your plan may cap how many sheets you can create per month. Duplicating and importing count toward the same monthly limit.
  • Sharing a sheet with specific teammates requires an organization — personal sheets can't be team-shared.

Where to find it

From the sidebar, open Profile & Company and click Sheets.

Step by step

Create a sheet

  1. Click New sheet in the top-right of the list.
  2. A new spreadsheet named Untitled sheet opens immediately in the editor — there's no form to fill in first.
  3. Click the title (pencil icon) to rename it, or use the ⋯ menu → Edit sheet to set:
    • Title (required) — up to 160 characters.
    • Description — optional, up to 480 characters.
    • Folder — file it into a folder, or leave it in Unfiled.
    • Shared with team — pick teammates who can view and edit this sheet. The owner and org admins always have access.
  4. Click Save.
Step by step

Edit a spreadsheet

  1. Click any sheet in the list to open it in the editor.
  2. Use the toolbar for formatting, fonts, and cell styling; type = in a cell to start a formula — the editor supports standard spreadsheet formulas.
  3. Your work autosaves about 1.5 seconds after you stop typing. A pill next to the title shows Saving…, Saved, or Save failed. Press Ctrl/Cmd + S to save immediately.
  4. If a teammate edited the same sheet, click the Refresh data button to pull in their latest version.
Step by step

Import spreadsheets

You can import from your computer or from Google Sheets. Both options live under the upload icon in the list header (to create new sheets) and inside the editor (to replace the open sheet's content).

From your computer

  1. Click the upload icon and choose From system.
  2. Drag in or pick up to 10 files — .xlsx, .xls, or .csv, each up to 10 MB.
  3. Each file becomes its own sheet.

From Google Sheets

  1. Click the upload icon and choose From Google Sheets.
  2. The first time, click Connect Google account and approve access.
  3. Pick the spreadsheets you want (up to 10 at a time) and import. You can disconnect your Google account from the same dialog at any time.
Step by step

Export a sheet

  1. Open the sheet and click the download icon in the editor toolbar.
  2. Choose Excel (.xlsx) or CSV (.csv). The file downloads immediately.
Step by step

Share a sheet outside your team

  1. Open the sheet and click Share.
  2. On the Create new link tab, choose the access type:
    • Public — anyone with the link can view.
    • Private — requires a password or a specific recipient email. For password links, Nautis generates a password you can copy; for email links, enter the recipient's name and email.
  3. Optionally set an expiry (1, 7, 30, or 90 days — or no expiry) and a Message shown at the top of the shared sheet.
  4. Choose what the link allows: viewing is always on; Allow comments is on by default; Allow editing and Allow download are off by default.
  5. Create the link and copy it. Recipients open it at a public page — no Nautis account needed.

Use the Manage links tab to copy, revoke, reset passwords, change permissions, and see view counts for every link you've created.

Step by step

Comment on a sheet

  1. Open the sheet and click the Comments toggle. A sidebar opens on the right.
  2. Type your comment. To anchor it to specific cells, select the cells first and click Attach selected cells — the comment records the exact range.
  3. Resolve, reopen, or delete comments from the same sidebar, and show or hide resolved threads. Guests viewing a shared link can also comment if the link allows it.
Step by step

Delete a sheet

  1. Open the sheet's ⋯ menu (in the list or the editor) and click Delete.
  2. Confirm in the Delete this sheet? dialog. Deletion is permanent — there's no undo.

Tips & limits

  • There's no create form — every sheet starts as Untitled sheet. Rename it right away so your list stays searchable.
  • Import limits: .xlsx, .xls, or .csv only, 10 MB per file, 10 files per batch.
  • Titles cap at 160 characters, descriptions at 480, comments at 4,000.
  • There's no real-time co-editing. Autosave writes your changes, but you won't see a teammate's edits until you click Refresh data — coordinate before editing the same sheet at the same time.
  • The spreadsheet engine downloads (~a few MB) the first time you open a sheet in a session, so the first open takes a moment on slow connections.
  • The editor follows your light/dark theme automatically.
  • On mobile, the list is the first screen; tapping a sheet opens a full-screen editor with a Back button. Editing works, but a big screen is far more comfortable for spreadsheet work.

Frequently asked questions

Do my changes save automatically?

Yes. Sheets autosaves shortly after you stop typing, and the pill next to the title confirms Saved. You can also press Ctrl/Cmd + S to save instantly.

Can two people edit the same sheet at once?

Not live. Both of you can have the sheet open, but you only see each other's changes after clicking Refresh data. If you both edit the same cells at the same time, the last save wins — so take turns on shared models.

Can I import my existing Excel files?

Yes — .xlsx, .xls, and .csv files up to 10 MB each, up to 10 at a time. You can also connect your Google account and import straight from Google Sheets.

Can I share a sheet with an investor who doesn't use Nautis?

Yes. Click Share and create a link — public, password-protected, or locked to a specific email. You control whether they can comment, edit, or download, and you can revoke the link at any time.

Does Sheets have AI features?

Not currently. Sheets is a full spreadsheet editor, but there's no AI generation or formula assistant in it yet.

Are there templates?

Not yet. Every sheet starts blank, or you can import an existing file to use as a starting point.

The editor says it couldn't load the spreadsheet engine. What's wrong?

The editor loads its engine from a content delivery network the first time it opens. Check your internet connection and reload. If you're on a corporate network, a firewall blocking CDN traffic can also cause this.

Why can't I create a new sheet?

Either you don't have create permission for Sheets (ask your admin), or you've hit your plan's monthly sheet-creation limit — duplicates and imports count too. See App usage limits.
