Glossary

3 min readUpdated

What it does

The glossary is your reference for startup terminology. Look up the meaning of any word you keep running into — from funding stages to legal terms — with definitions, pronunciation, etymology, examples, and links to related terms.

Who can use it

Anyone with read access to the Glossary module. The glossary is read-only for users — the term list is curated centrally.

Where to find it

From the sidebar, open Resources & Learning and click Glossary.

Step by step

Browsing terms

  1. The page opens with terms grouped alphabetically — every letter that has at least one term gets its own section.
  2. Each section heading shows the letter and a count of terms underneath it.
  3. Scroll the list, or use the A–Z bar at the top to jump straight to a letter. Letters with no terms are dimmed and disabled.
  4. Each term card shows the term, its category tag, and a two-line preview of the definition.
Step by step

Searching for a term

  1. Type any part of a term into Search terms… in the left panel.
  2. The list switches to N result(s) mode and shows matching terms as cards.
  3. Click the x inside the search box to clear the search and return to the A–Z browse view.
  4. If nothing matches, you will see No Results Found with a button to Clear Search.
Step by step

Filtering by category

  1. Under Categories in the left panel, click any category name. The term list narrows to that category only.
  2. The count next to each category name tells you how many terms it contains.
  3. Click All Categories to remove the filter.
  4. You can search inside an active category — searching automatically clears the category to give you the broadest results.
Step by step

Viewing a definition

  1. Click any term card. A details dialog opens.
  2. The dialog header shows the term, the category tag, and (if available) the pronunciation in a /slashes/ badge.
  3. Click the speaker icon next to the term to hear it spoken aloud using your browser's voice synthesis.
  4. The body of the dialog includes:
    • Definition — the main explanation.
    • Etymology — where the word comes from (when available).
    • Examples — sample sentences or scenarios in a callout box (when available).
    • Related Terms — clickable cards for words that share context. Click any related term to jump straight to its full definition.
  5. Click outside the dialog or press Esc to close it.

Tips & limits

  • Category dots and the colored left border on each card help you spot which area of business a term belongs to.
  • Related-term cards work like links — click them to keep exploring connected concepts without going back to the main list.
  • Search matches the term and definition, so you can also search by a keyword from inside a definition.
  • The pronunciation playback uses your browser's built-in voice. If you do not hear anything, check that your system volume is up and that your browser allows audio for the site.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add my own terms to the glossary?

The user-facing glossary is curated by the Nautis team. If you spot a term that is missing or wrong, contact support and we will review it.

Why are some letters greyed out in the A–Z bar?

Those letters have no terms yet — or no terms in the category you are currently filtering by. Clear the category filter to see every letter that has content.

The pronunciation button does nothing — what is wrong?

The button uses your browser's speech synthesis API. Some browsers and operating systems disable it by default or block it on the first click. Check your browser's sound permissions for the site and try again.

Can I share a link to a specific term?

The term opens in a dialog, so the URL does not change. To share a definition with a teammate, ask them to open the glossary and search for the term name.

Is the glossary the same for every organization?

Yes. The term list is global to Nautis. Filters and searches you apply are only on your screen and do not change what other people see.
