What it does
A real-time messaging space for your team. Send messages in shared channels or in one-on-one direct messages, attach files, react with emojis, mention teammates, and reply in threads.
Who can use it
- Anyone in your organization with read access to the Chat module.
- Sending messages, creating channels, and managing them require the matching permissions.
- The feature must be enabled on your plan.
Where to find it
From the sidebar, open Profile & Company and click Team Chat.
Create a channel
- In Chat, click the + button next to the Channels section in the sidebar.
- Fill in:
- Name — for example, product-design (spaces get converted to hyphens).
- Description — what this channel is for.
- Guidelines — optional posting norms.
- Visibility — Public (anyone in your org can join) or Private (invite-only).
- If you chose Private, tick the teammates you want to add. You're added automatically.
- Click Create channel.
To edit or delete a channel later, open the channel and find the channel options. You can update visibility, description, members, or remove the channel entirely.
Send a direct message
- In the Chat sidebar, find a teammate's name under Team Members.
- Click their name. A direct message thread opens.
- Type your message in the box at the bottom and press Enter to send.
The green, yellow, red, or grey dot next to each teammate shows whether they're online, away, busy (do not disturb), or offline.
Send a message
- Open the channel or DM you want to write in.
- Click into the message box at the bottom.
- Type your message. You can:
- Use the formatting toolbar for bold, italics, lists, and code.
- Press Shift+Enter for a new line.
- Press Enter to send.
Attach files and images
- With the message box open, click the paperclip icon to attach any file, or the image icon to attach images specifically.
- Pick the file from your computer.
- A preview appears above the message box. Add an optional note.
- Press Enter or click send.
Voice notes: click the microphone icon, record your message, then send. The recipient can play it back inline.
Mention a teammate
- While composing, type
@and start typing a name. - Pick the person from the dropdown.
- Send the message.
Mentioned users get a notification so they know to check the message.
React to a message
- Hover over (or long-press on mobile) a message you want to react to.
- Click the smiley face icon.
- Pick an emoji from the picker. Click the same emoji again on that message to remove your reaction.
Reply in a thread
- Hover over the message you want to respond to.
- Click the reply icon.
- The reply panel opens on the side. Type your reply and send.
Replies stay grouped with the original message so the main view doesn't get cluttered. Anyone who replied or was mentioned in the thread gets notifications about new replies.
Mark messages as read
Opening a channel or DM marks its visible messages as read. The unread badge (the number next to the channel or member's name) clears once you've scrolled through new messages.
To jump to your unread items, look for the unread badge in the sidebar — channels and people with unread messages appear with bold names and a counter.
Bookmark, pin, copy to a data room, and turn into a task
Each message has an action menu with extra options:
- Pin an important message so the channel members can find it again. Pinned messages show in a dedicated section at the top of the channel.
- Bookmark to save the message in your personal bookmarks.
- Copy to Data Room to send an attachment straight into a data room.
- Create task to turn a message into a task on your board.
Tips & limits
- Messages are encrypted at rest.
- Use the search field at the top of the sidebar to filter channels and people quickly.
- You can drag and drop files from your desktop onto the chat window to attach them.
- A connection status indicator shows up if you go offline. Sending is paused until you reconnect; messages you typed stay in the box.
- Channels marked private only appear in the sidebar for their members.
Frequently asked questions
Who can see my messages in a public channel?
Anyone in your organization with chat access. Private channels are only visible to members you invited.
Can I delete a message I sent?
Yes. Open the message's action menu and choose delete. People who already saw it may have read it before you removed it.
Can I edit a message after sending?
Yes. Open the action menu on your own message and choose edit. Other participants see an "edited" indicator.
How do I leave a channel?
Open the channel's options and find the leave option. You can rejoin a public channel anytime; for a private channel, a member has to invite you back.
Will I get notified for every message?
You get notifications for direct messages, mentions, and replies to your threads. Channel messages without a mention are quieter by default — open the channel's notification settings to change this.
