What it does

Nautis Business Plans gives you a guided, section-by-section workspace to write a complete business plan. You can pull in data from your other Nautis modules, let AI draft each section for you, track completion, and export the finished plan as a PDF or Word document.

Who can use it

  • Any teammate whose role has the Business Plans permission enabled.
  • The Business Plans module must be turned on for your organization.
  • You must have a verified email address to create a new plan.
  • Free plans usually include a monthly cap on the number of plans you can create. When you hit it, Nautis will show you the limit.

Where to find it

From the sidebar, open Strategy & Planning and click Business Plans.

Step by step

Create a new business plan

  1. On the Business Plans page, click Create Plan in the top-right.
  2. Pick a template:
    • Start from scratch uses the default template, which already includes the standard sections.
    • Or click any of the other template cards (each one shows how many sections it includes and which category it belongs to).
  3. On the next screen, fill in:
    • Business Plan Name (required) — for example, "Q1 2026 Business Plan".
    • Description — optional one-liner to remind you what this plan is for.
    • Shared Access — pick the team members who should be able to open and edit this plan. Owners always have access by default.
  4. Click Create.

Nautis opens the new plan in the editor straight away.

Step by step

Edit a section

Each plan is split into sections (Executive Summary, Company Overview, Market Analysis, and so on). The list of sections is on the left.

  1. Click any section in the sidebar to open it.
  2. Type into the editor. The font, headings, lists and styling work like a normal document.
  3. Type / inside the editor to bring up a slash menu for headings, lists, quotes, and other blocks.
  4. Your changes save automatically about a second after you stop typing. You'll see Saved in the top bar when it's done. You can also press Ctrl+S (or Cmd+S on Mac) to force-save right away.
  5. When the section feels finished, click Mark Complete. The section turns green and the overall progress bar at the top moves forward. Click Re-Edit to reopen it for changes.
Step by step

Use AI to write or improve a section

If your organization has AI features enabled for Business Plans, each section shows a Generate with AI button in the top-right.

  1. Open the section you want to write.
  2. Click Generate with AI.
  3. If the section already has content, Nautis asks you to confirm — generating again replaces what's there. A snapshot of the old content is saved to version history so you can roll back.
  4. Wait a few seconds. The new draft appears in the editor.

You can also use AI to polish what's already written. Open the section's More menu (the three-dot icon in the top-right) and choose AI Chat to have a conversation about the section. You can ask the AI to expand a paragraph, shorten it, make it more investor-friendly, and so on. When you like what the AI suggests, click to apply it to the editor.

AI generation uses some of your organization's AI credits. If credits run out, Nautis tells you and you can top up from the AI credits page.

Step by step

Pull data from linked projects

You don't have to type everything from scratch. Nautis can pull facts from your other modules into the relevant sections.

  1. In the top-right of the editor, click Link Projects.
  2. Pick the GTM workspace, financial project and startup profile you want to connect to this plan.
  3. Click to save.
  4. Open a section that supports import (for example, the Financial Plan section pairs with a financial project, the Go-to-Market Strategy section pairs with a GTM workspace).
  5. Click Import Data in the section toolbar.

Nautis fills in the section with structured details from the linked project. You can then edit or run the AI on top of that draft.

Step by step

Add, hide, reorder, or remove sections

  • Add a section: click Add Section at the bottom of the section list. Pick a template (Competitive Analysis, Customer Personas, Partnerships & Channels, etc.) or choose Custom Section to write your own title and short description.
  • Reorder: hover a section in the sidebar and drag the grip handle on the left.
  • Hide: click the eye icon next to a section name. Hidden sections move to a "Hidden" group at the bottom of the sidebar and don't count toward your completion percentage. Your content is kept safe.
  • Show again: open the Hidden group and click the eye icon next to the section.
  • Delete permanently: only available for hidden sections. Click the red trash icon next to the hidden section, then confirm. This wipes the section, its versions, comments and AI chats — there is no undo.
Step by step

See history and roll back

Every save creates a snapshot you can recover.

  1. Open a section.
  2. Click the More menu in the top-right of the section.
  3. Choose Version History.
  4. Pick a previous version and click to restore. The current content is replaced; you can always go back to the latest version too.
Step by step

Discuss with your team

Each section has its own comment thread.

  1. Open the section.
  2. Click the More menu, then Comments.
  3. Type your message and post. The teammate badge counter in the More menu shows how many comments are open on a section.
Step by step

Set a plan status

The status badge sits next to the plan title in the editor header.

  • Draft — the default working state. Edit freely.
  • In Review — your plan is ready for review, but still editable.
  • Approved — the entire plan becomes read-only. The AI buttons, edit buttons and Mark Complete buttons disappear, so nothing changes by accident.

Only the plan owner or an organization admin can change the status. To re-open an Approved plan for edits, the owner sets it back to Draft.

Step by step

Score my plan

The Score My Plan button (top-right of the editor) runs an AI review of every section and gives you a numeric score plus suggestions. This also uses some AI credits.

Step by step

Preview, download as PDF or Word, or print

  1. Click the eye icon (Preview & Export) in the top-right of the editor.
  2. Use the buttons in the preview header:
    • Download PDF — saves a polished PDF with a cover page, table of contents and all visible sections.
    • Download DOCX — opens a Word version in a new tab.
    • Print — uses your browser's print dialog.

Only visible sections that have content are included. Hidden sections and empty ones are skipped.

Step by step

Share a plan with teammates

  1. On the Business Plans list, click a plan to open it.
  2. Click the small edit (pencil) icon next to the title.
  3. In Shared Access, tick the teammates who need access.
  4. Click Update.
Step by step

Duplicate or delete a plan

On the Business Plans list:

  • Click the three-dot menu on a plan card.
  • Choose Duplicate to copy it as a new plan (it still counts toward your monthly limit).
  • Choose Delete to remove the plan after confirming. This is permanent.

Tips & limits

  • The progress bar at the top counts only visible sections. Hide sections you don't need to keep your percentage meaningful.
  • Save often by hand with Ctrl+S / Cmd+S if you're switching apps or losing connection.
  • Approved plans can't be edited until an owner moves them back to Draft — useful for locking the final version before a board meeting.
  • Word counts and reading progress per section are visible inside each section's toolbar.
  • AI features can be turned off per organization. If you don't see the Generate with AI button, ask your admin.

Frequently asked questions

Will the AI overwrite what I've already written?

Only if you tell it to. When a section already has content and you click Generate with AI, Nautis pops up a confirm dialog and saves the previous content to Version History before replacing it.

How are AI credits charged?

Generating a section, scoring the plan, and chatting with the AI each draw a small number of credits from your organization. If you run out, you'll see a clear message and can buy more from the AI credits area.

Can I export only a few sections?

Hide the sections you don't want included, then open Preview & Export. The PDF, DOCX and print views all skip hidden sections.

My collaborator can't see the plan. Why?

Either their role doesn't have Business Plans permission, or they aren't in the Shared Access list. Add them in the edit dialog and double-check their role with your admin.

What happens when I link a financial project or GTM workspace?

Linking on its own doesn't change your content — it just unlocks the Import Data button inside sections that match (for example, Financial Plan pulls from the financial project, GTM Strategy pulls from the GTM workspace). You can re-import as often as you like.
